š¶Measuring Guide for a Y-Harness
For a Y-harness, you need five measurements:
1. Sternum-Neck
2. Head circumference
3. Girth (chest/belly circumference)
4. Back strap length
5. Chest strap length
1. Sternum-Neck Length: (Do not measure the neck circumference, but only one side of the neck)
How to measure correctly:
Measure from the prominent bones, from the sternum to the withers (palpable center between the shoulder blades in the neck area). Do not measure the neck circumference, but only one side of the neck.
2. Head circumference (distance over the widest part of the skull). NOT the neck circumference!!
How to measure correctly:
⢠Place the measuring tape at the widest part of the skull.
⢠Wrap the measuring tape all the way around, over the ears if they are floppy.
⢠This is the point where the Y converges at the front.
3. Girth (NOT directly behind the front legs!)
How to measure correctly:
⢠Measure the circumference a little behind the front legs,
where the rib cage is widest,
but NOT directly in the armpit.
⢠The measuring tape should run freely without slipping into the armpit.
Why:
Directly behind the legs ā chafes.
Too far back ā harness sits too loosely.
4. Back strap length (length along the top of the back)
How to measure correctly:
⢠Start again at the base of the neck, at the back.
⢠Run the measuring tape along the top of the back
⢠to the point where the belly strap should sit later
ā i.e., a little behind the front legs, not directly behind them.
Why:
The back strap determines whether the harness pulls up in the front or slides back.
5. Chest strap length (length down the front of the chest)
How to measure correctly:
⢠Find the point below the neck where the neck and chest meet (collarbone area).
⢠Place the measuring tape there.
⢠Run the measuring tape vertically down over the chest.
⢠Measure to the point where the lower belly strap should sit later.
This is not directly behind the front legs, but a little behind them, so nothing chafes.
Why:
If the chest strap is too short ā the harness presses into the throat.
If it is too long ā the harness hangs too low and is unstable.
Only with the correct length will the Y stay neatly in position at the front.
